Fish Vortex

Fish Vortex is a mixed media work on board by Walt Viviers — an unusual piece in the artist's practice, both in medium and in its intricate, pattern-driven composition. Dozens of small outlined fish form a spiralling vortex, circling from a warm green-gold centre outward through layered shades of teal and blue, the repetitive form creating a meditative, hypnotic effect. The board mount is integral to the work's character — the heavy wooden surround with its metal bolts reinforces the handmade quality and distinguishes it from Viviers' canvas-based practice.
