Orchids

Orchids is a 2010 acrylic on canvas that shows Walt Viviers at his most exuberant in the floral register — large blooms rendered in a high-energy palette of hot pink, cobalt blue, and luminous white, with the kind of loose, gestural energy that distinguishes his best work from botanical illustration. The composition fills the canvas with overlapping forms, white impasto outlines tracing the flowers' organic shapes against a saturated field of colour. Full of warmth and movement, Orchids is one of the earliest examples of the expressive technique that would characterise much of Viviers' later practice.
