Thoughts is one of Walt Viviers' most ambitious early works — a large 76 × 102 cm acrylic on canvas completed in 2012 that draws on surrealism and the visual language of collage to build a densely layered composition. Working across a ground of yellow and ochre, Viviers assembles fragments of imagery — an eye, a pair of lips, a coffee cup, a Roman numeral clock face, an infinity symbol, geometric planes and dripped paint — into a structure that reads simultaneously as a face and as a diagram of consciousness. The palette is electric: yellow-greens, oranges, earthy browns and black, with passages of raw white breaking through. Thoughts sits in the tradition of artists who approach the canvas as a space for mental accumulation rather than singular statement, and it remains one of Viviers' most complex and rewarding paintings. It is held in a private collection.
